Contents Insurance

Why do I need contents insurance?

No matter how careful you are, there’s always a risk that your belongings could be broken, damaged or stolen, even if it’s not your fault.

We do not cover your contents as part of the tenancy agreement or lease, so it’s a good idea to consider what a home contents insurance policy would cover you for to make an informed decision on whether you need one.

To help you decide, we have teamed up with Thistle Tenant Risks who provide an easy and affordable way to insure your contents and personal possessions.

The Crystal Insurance Scheme is a specialist insurance scheme provided by Thistle Tenant Risks. The policy covers the contents and personal belongings of tenants in social housing against loss or damage from specific events (for example, fire, theft, or escape of water), as well as items such as furniture, carpets, curtains, clothes, bedding, electrical items, jewellery, pictures and ornaments.

They have produced this video called ‘An introduction to home contents insurance’ which explains more:

Buildings insurance

We have building insurance for all of our homes, which covers the structure of the property and any fixtures and fittings.

Leaseholders and Shared Owners

Tein Housing is responsible for arranging buildings insurance for all leasehold flats and shared ownership properties.

Building insurance claims should be reported to us in the first instance. There may be an excess payment for building insurance claims, which you may be responsible for, depending on your lease.

Leaseholders and shared owners will need to arrange contents insurance separately as buildings insurance does not cover this.
